DCE for the Solaris Operating Environment

Transarc Corporation

DCE for Solaris is a binary implementation of the Open SoftwareFoundation's (OSF) Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) for SunSPARCstations running SunOS 4.1.3 or Solaris 2.3. DCE for Solariscurrently supports the following core DCE components, all based on DCEversion 1.0.3a from the OSF * Threads: DCE supports multi-threadedapplications, i.e. applications that use light-weight processes toperform multiple functions simultaneously. DCE for Solaris running onSunOS 4.1.3 uses Transarc-developed technology that supports most of thePOSIX standard threading interface while preserving the ability for DCEapplications to call many non-threaded UNIX services. For DCE for Solarisrunning on Solaris 2.3 Transarc has implemented a threads library whichis compliant with the POSIX pthreads standard (Draft 4), making use ofSolaris 2.3 native kernel threading support. * RPC: The Remote ProcedureCall (RPC) is the fundamental distributed communications mechanism withinDCE for developing applicators that readily access many differentcomputing resources across heterogeneous computing environments. * NameService: The Cell Directory Service (CDS) is the mechanism for namingobjects with a DCE cell, allowing programs to identify resources by namewithout needing to know where the resources are located. DCE for Solarisalso supports the Global Directory Agent (GDA), which resolves namesbetween DCE cells using the Internet-style Domain Name Service (and inthe future, using X.500). * Security: DCE Security Services includeauthentication (using Kerberos), access control lists (ACLs) and dataprivacy (using data encryption). * Time: The Distributed Time Service(DTS) provides a way to synchronize the clocks on the different machinesin a distributed network. DCE for Solaris also supports the DCEDistributed File Service (DCE-DFS) on Solaris 2.3 only. DFS is a high-performance, secure method for sharing files in a distributedenvironment. DFS simplifies the sharing of data between users on anetwork by supporting a unified, globally distributed file system. DFSappears to the user as a single local file system, providing access tofiles from anywhere in the network. with the same filename used by all--afeature called uniform file access. DFS achieves high performance andreduces network traffic and file server loading by caching data at theclient machine. Security of data stored in DFS is ensured through the useof the DCE Security Service and access to data is controlled by DFSaccess control lists (ACLs).
